Platanus x. Hispanica, London Plane

The London plane is a large deciduous tree growing up 30 meteres high
It is very tolerant of atmospheric pollution and root compaction and has greater degree of winter cold tolerance than P. orientalis. Requires a sunny position in a deep fertile well-drained soil. It is also Very tolerant of root disturbance, trees up to 5 metres tall can be moved quite easily.

Walking on Oxford Road towards the MMU Student Union, there's a very nice row of London Planes. This particular specie is on Brancaster Road next to the demolished BBC Building. It's young tree compared to the rest on Oxford Road. Unfortunately it has only couple of leaves on it, but still bright green.

The bark is pale grey, smooth and exfoliating, or buff-brown and not exfoliating.

The leaves are thick and stiff-textured, broad, palmately lobed. The young leaves in spring are coated with fine stiff hairs at first, but these wear off by late summer.

The flowers are borne in 1 to 3 dense spherical inflorescences on a pendulous stem. They have male and female flowers on separate stems.
The fruit matures in about 6 months
