Primula vulgaris, Primrose
Primrose is
herbaceous perennial from Primulaceae family native to western and southern
Europe.
This primrose
is planted in a big planter, part of the new planting scheme for Tudor Square
in Sheffield. It is planted in combination with other perennials such as narcissus,
ornamental grasses etc. Very well maintained with lots of sunlight. The soil
was well moist with layer of mulch.
Primrose is
widely spread in hedgerows, woodlands and shady meadows. It grows up to 20 cm
with basal rosette of leaves which are in the right conditions can persist
during winter. The leaves are oval,
tapering and crinkly up to 12 cm long.
The flowers
are 2-3cm across, 5-lobed and pale yellow usually with deep yellow centres,
solitary arising from the centre of the leaf rosette. The flowering period is
February until May.
