Fraxinus excelsiour, Ash



Ash tree is deciduous tall tree that can reach 25 - 35 cm in height  Some of the species can live over 800 years. Ash woodlands have light airy canopy and  rich ground flora underneath. This Ash tree is located at the entrance of Manor Park, Glossop. It grows close to a small canal the company of Beech and Birch close to it. Its position is sunny, the soil underneath is moist and looks well-drained.



 The Ash bole is strait and has high, open and domed crown.



The shoots are greenish-grey with black buds, which distinguished the tree from other Ash species. 


The bark is grey and smooth in young trees and deeply fissured in older, but still with grey colour.



Male and female flowers are separate on separate species, but sometime they can grow on single one.
Fruits are single-winged 'keys' that hang in bunches and usually stay on the tree after the leaves have fallen.
