Vinca, Periwinkle

Vinca is an evergreen shrub which grows up to 0.5m in height. It’s a perfect plant for ground cover and this one in particular is fully covering the ground underneath a mature Oak tree canopy in the Botanical Gardens of Corvinus University in Budapest, Hungary. The only reason why this Vinca keeps struggling to cover the rest of the ground is because of a desire line meandering around the trees. Vinca is a great plant, very easy to grow and spreads very fast. It can be used for erosion control of the soil and it also thrives in shady places and in almost any type of soil.  It has invasive character and can also choke other plants around it, but here in this garden it hasn't spread very much, maybe because of maintenance, and doesn't present a threat for the other plant species. It looks like it has been planted mainly for aesthetic and educational function.
