Hyacinthoides non-scripta, Bluebell
Hyacinthoides
non-scripta or Bluebell is perennial plant that grows from bulb. It’s widely
spread in woodlands and also on coastal cliffs. If the conditions are suitable
enough for the plant it forms continuous carpets. It grows up to 50cm in
height.
This
particular Bluebell is located on Fallowfield Loop, contrasting in colour with
the other Bluebells in the background. Its location is slightly shady, with
well moist and good soil conditions.
The plant has
long leaves up to 15mm wide basal, glossy green.
Its flowers
are bell-shaped with 6 recurved lobes. They can be bluish purple, very occasionally
pink or white in colour with strong sweet scent.
The bluebell
produces black seeds which germinate on the soil surface.
In the
United Kingdom, Hyacinthoides non-scripta is a protected species under the
Wildlife and Countryside Act from 1981, and landowners are prohibited of
removing bluebells from their land for sale.
