Malus domestica, Cultivated Apple
Malus
domestica or Culticated apple is small deciduous tree from the Roscaeae family.
This apple
tree is located next to the Bowling Green in Longford Park. It is one of a few purposefully
pruned and shaped in a way to form a hedge, and probably to hide the brick wall
behind it. The tree receives a lot of sunlight and by the amount of buds and
flowers I can concluded that it’s been looked after very well. The soil conditions are very good with layer of mulch on the top.
The apple
tree bark is usually brown and fissured. Its leaves are alternately arranged
with elliptical shape with slightly pointed tip and toothed margin.
The flowers
are white or tinged with pink and in some varieties are produced abundantly in
short –stalked clusters.
It is the
one of the most cultivated trees because of its apple fruits. The tree flowers
in Spring and bares fruits in Autumn. There is variety of fruit colours and
sizes. The fruits produced for commercial use have to be 7-8 cm in diameter.
