Viburnum opulus, Guelder rose
Viburnum
opulus or Guelder-rose is deciduous shrub with hairless, twigs and scaly buds. It
is widely used as ornamental flowers because of its flowers and berries.
This
Guelder-rose is located opposite MMU Business School, on the back of All Saints
Park.
It grows quite vigorously, despite the little space on which it grows and
is also
enjoying sunlight mainly in the afternoon.
There is barely any
competition around it and it looks like the plant is not shaped in any
particular way.
The
Guelder-rose grows up to 4m in height with leaves divided into 5 irregularly toothed
lobs.
It flowers
in June-July with white flowers in flat-topped clusters comprising outer
flowers which are
15-20mm across and inner ones which are 4-7mm across.
The plant
produces red berries in clusters containing single seed which are dispersed by
birds.
