Acer campestre, Field Maple

Field maple is medium sized deciduous tree with compact bushy crown. It prefers good moist well-drained soils in sunny position also tolerates some shade and atmospheric pollution.
The tree grows fast, once when it is established, but later on the process slows and takes about 50 years to reach maturity.

The Field maple that I found is no taller than 8 - 10 meters. It grows alone on a green loan in Manor Park, Glossop. There are two lime trees close to it, approximately in 2 meters distance. The soil is moist and well-drained. There is plenty of sunlight.

The bark is finely fissured, often  somewhat corky bark.

The shoots are brown with dark brown winter buds.

Leaves are in opposite pairs 5 -16 cm long with 5 blunt, rounded lobes with smooth margins.

Flowers are monoecious and appear at the same time as the leaves in spring in yellow green clusters.
The fruits are in samara with two winged achenes aligned at 180 degrees.
