Hamamelis mollis, Witch Hazel
Hamamelis
mollis is deciduous large shrub or a small tree with ovate leaves and also yellow
to red fragrant flowers which appear in late winter and early spring. This
small tree grows in the Botanical Gardens in Dunham Massey, Cheshire. It is
planted in the winter garden section of the Botanical garden mainly because of
its beautiful winter flowers. Its location right next to the footpath makes it immediately
noticeable. The tree is surrounded by low perennial vegetation which does not
does not affect the tree view. The soil is moist but well drained. It grows
very well and the first leaves are already appearing. The base of the trunk is
still has protection and support. The function of this Hamamelis tree is purely
aesthetic, judging by the clear stem and evenly spread branches. Although Hamamelis
species are planted mainly for ornamental purposes they are also pest tolerant
and are largely used in woodland gardens.
