Pyracantha coccinea, Firethorn
Pyracantha
coccinea is an evergreen shrub which grows in fast rate. It is mainly
ornamental plant and can tolerate reasonable exposure and atmospheric pollution.
This plant grows in the Botanical Gardens of Corvinus University in Budapest,
Hungary. It has been intentionally planted with other Pyracantha species
possible to make the comparison between them easier for the students from the
university. The soil underneath is moist and well drained. And the ground
around the Pyracantha looks to be regularly weeded. The plant has sought-east
exposure and grows healthy and vigorously. Fresh new leaves are appearing but
the flowers will appear in the summer. The garden in total is nowhere near
neglected but this Pyracantha is very overgrown and looks to be completely abandoned.
Maybe the aim is for the plant to completely overtake the unused staircase so
it will be buried and unreachable. The reason the plant has been left to overgrow might
be for educational purposes and observation.
