x. cupressocyparis leylandii, Leyland Cypress
Leyland Cypress is a fast growing evergreen tree which can grow up to a
40m high. It can grow in fully exposed position and tolerates reasonable maritime
exposure. This Cypress tree is located in the Botanical Garden of Corvinus
University in Budapest, Hungary. It is planted in a section with other
evergreen trees and is fully exposed to wind and sun light. The cypress has the
typical pyramidal shape and grows strong and healthy. Leyland Cypress is largely used for hedging
but singularly is unsuitable for that purpose. This tree can thrive in almost
every type of soil and responds very well to pollution and also salt spray. Here
the tree thrives in well-drained soil. It also tolerates trimming so long as it’s
not cut back into old wood. Because of its vigorous growth the Leyland Cypress
needs constant maintenance in order to keep it within bounds therefore it is
not suitable for every garden. In this case the tree has enough space to grow
and does not need much of a maintenance. Its function in the garden is
ornamental and mainly educational and it’s a perfect specimen to be studied.
Small
circular cones can be spotted here and there on the tree.
